Hey all,
So I’ve been a happy owner of a DDX for about 6 months now. It was a hard decision for me as I commute 100kms a day mostly by motorcycle. To justify the purchase, I had to sell my daily - Yamaha XSR900 - AND the Yamaha WRF450 ☹. Saying goodbye to the latter was tough, but I absolutely fell in love with the Duc at first sight. I’ve been riding on and off road for over 20 years, so it’s not my first Ducati, but it is my first big adventure bike.

handover day!

Anyway, the Ducati quickly raised my spirits, so now I just do everything on the one bike!

I haven’t done any real mods, apart from the factory protection, and a perun rear rack set up with the bits for a givi monolock case. I do have a bunch of luggage options from the old bikes though, so I’m looking at ideas and some help.
I have a set of Nelson Rigg sierra soft panniers that I used to run on the Yamaha, but no pannier racks. (I should have bought some mosko ages ago but I just couldn’t bite the bullet on the price. Regret now!)
I really like the look of the nomad Sherpa side racks, but I’m not sure I’ll be able to mount them with the perun rack. Does anyone have any experience with this?
Or any other advice on mounting the panniers without melting on the muffler?

Anyway, thanks for reading, and for helping build this forum with so much great info.
Good on ya mates

If I had to start over again with mods...I would go with mosko moto bags and nomad adv luggage racks...

Welcome to the forum @Deserter and congrats on getting your bike! Glad to hear you're enjoying it so far. What has been the standout thing for you about the DesertX?

Thanks! 100% agree on the mosko moto bags. I was really close to pushing go on the 40L for my enduro a few years back, but decided to have a human baby instead. Go figure.
I think I will eventually go down that path, but for now just trying to use what I’ve already got.

Thanks @DesertDog! I’m still so impressed at how well the bike does both on and off road. It’s actually better than my old XSR900 on road! Mainly due to better suspension. Obviously it’s not as hardcore off road as the old WRF450, but I haven’t found a track that I didn’t get through yet. And forget about riding 50kms on the enduro, let alone 300! I’m going for a solo trip into the bush in June so I’ll push it a bit harder then. I don’t really have much big ADV experience to compare it to, but it definitely feels like it’s up in the top 2 or 3.

Some things piss me off… cable ties? Already broken a couple and not what I expect from a premium brand. Would also have liked backlit controls as I do get caught after sundown sometimes. But I’ve never had that before so that’s ok lol.
One thing that bothered me a bit, and I don’t want to come off as entitled, is how the bike was presented as I bought it new. All I got were the keys and luggage lock barrels in a cardboard box. I bought a new Speed triple back in 2015, and that came with a leather folder for documentation, a leather key cover and key ring which I still use. Even the XSR came with a handy waterproof document pouch. It’s not a big deal, but sometimes little things make a difference in how instantly attached you become to a brand. I guess these things could be dealer specific, but they could be mandated by Ducati.
Overall I am super happy and haven’t regretted the decision at all, even expecting too!

Cheers

+1 on the mosko setup. Yeah its pricey but its very well made and you get a heat shied! They will sell the heat shield separately if that interests you.

i have the mosko 80 setup and it’s perfect for multi day moto camping

Aww dude, you’re killing me. The mosko bags look amazing!
Do you run them rackless?
Yeah, rackless. Easier to swap to other bikes, less weight and hardware.
