Noice from the windshield

1809 Views 24 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  Pipeman
Spend 5 days on the DDX before buying, and first day I got ringing bells in my ears after riding, I use moulded ear plugs of a hight quality, got a new Nexx WedII Carbon edition, an upgrade from 4 years with Nexx, been riding 50.000km on my GS with that setup with no problems at all

The DDX makes a kind of deep low frequency rumbling on the helmet in driving position, if I stand up its gone, so it comes from turbulence from the windscreen

It was a problem all 5 days, I livede with it because I read online that I could get a higher windscreen and a lower seat that would fix the problem, and I climbed around on the bike to get out of the noise 😳

Now I got my own DDX, and today I changed the windscreen to the expensive touring version, and there is close to no change, the noise is unbearable for me, and im so annoyed over this, I took the peak off the helmet, tried 2 other helmet and ended fire up the old GS and tried with the same helmets and routes, freezing my ass off, button line is, the noise comes from the DDX, its a huge problem for me, I have only found WRS, but they looks the same as OEM, and the extensions looks sloppy

Try a diffrent helmet ,some reports state some helmets are alot worse than others for turbulence , www.wrs.it make bigger touring screens aswel for the DDX

Yup, it's terrible for me too. I've tried the Ducati Touring screen, I've tried the WRS shorty screen. I've tried them with the ugly spoiler on top and I CAN NOT get the buffeting to "acceptable" at highway speeds. The shorty screen is even worse. With the buffeting starting at like 45 mph. I''m not looking for "dead air". I'm just looking for something that doesn't deafen me and makes me dizzy from the pounding. And forget about cross winds or head winds. Even worse.

I've also tried riding with various helmets. Peak, no peak, helmet shape and while it does make a difference between say a Arai XD-4 and a Klim. There is zero difference between a Klim, an Arai (sportbike helmet), Shoei X-14, AGV Pista RR, or even my new R1 Scoprion.

Now I've had over a dozen ADV bikes and this is honestly the absolute worst. The best air flow has been the ones with laminar air flow, or splits or a gap that allows air under the windshield. I know that if companies like National Cycle or Madstad comes out with something, it's going to work but it's going to be ugly as hell.

Personally it's to the point that I can't stand riding the bike. I'm seriously considering selling it or trading it on something else. Yeah, I don't spend alot of time on the highway but there are many back roads where the pace can get up to that. Now I spend my time 50/50. At typical offroad speedds its fine, BUT I've got to take highway or backroads to get to the dirt....

I hope someone comes out with something that works before I truly get fed up and get rid of the bike.

Thanks for letting me vent!

I note this problem first day I ride it. Now I can say it is not an issue for me. I am 175 cm tall, and to fix it I have install low seat and WRS long windshield. I test the lateral windshields from DRS too but I am ok without them. Now I can go on highway without dirty wind in my head at least until 140 km/h. The WRS windshield is a little back tilted and is longer than original. I noted this with the nexx helmet more than with the schuberth without sun shade

I am 5’10” & stock windscreen was horrible. I put on the Rally seat and WRS short screen & it is way better. Ear plugs manage the wind noise which is still louder than my 08 Hypermotard 1100 but no more buffeting. Have tested to triple digits but not for extended time. Helmet is Arai Chaser X. I would prefer & even shorter screen so hopefully someone will make one & I agree standing up is the best & what I am aiming for.

standing up is great off-road, but riding transport and daily commuting I want to be able to rest behind the windscreen, specially over 130 km/t...

even if I lower my head a little (im 180cm) its still there, I got the low seat as well, and would be ok with spending more money on a new windshield, but would like to know if it will do the thing before, think my next step will be to modified the original ...
I noted an improvement with the WRS windshield but you are 5 cm taller than me and maybe It doesn’t work for you. My friend is 1.70 m and he is ok with stock windshield

Please don't let this discussion just die. We need to find a solution.

A crazy idea is maybe somehow make a hole in the windshield hoping to deflect some of the pressure cause in the front ende, and maybe reducing turbulence? Same as the Husqvarna 901 Norden Expedition windshield.

WRS enduro screen cut down 2.5 inches works for me at 5’10”. Not as quiet as no s reen but buffeting is gone and ear plugs handle the wind noise.

There is some potential there. What i would like to know is if Ducati did any wind tunnel testing prior to sending the screen and bike into production.

anyone have a way of modeling something like this with software??

for me it’s quite an annoyance and i dont want a tall screen but would gladly mod an aftermarket screen lower or punch some holes in it…

Hoping that Unit Garage comes out with an option. Their windscreens typically have the airflow hole similar to KTM and Husky.

where did you finde the side defectors?
I’m running into the same noise problem. No buffeting or head bobble. Just intolerable noise. I’m 5’11” (180cm) and I’ve tried Klim Krios, Arai xd4, and Arai Quantum. I’ve shifted riding position. Only peaceful ride is standing. I’ll start trying to find a solution. If I can’t, the bike is going up for sale. I’m really disappointed in Ducati now. I wouldn’t prefer my desert sled to my desert x.

Take it off! Then next best iptiom is to cut it down like I did. Totally acceptable with ear plugs and my Arai XD 4 or my Arai Chaser X.

Try the WRS side deflectors and a small visor for on top of the windscreen. Made all the difference.

There's another couple of threads on here on the same subject. Containing details of Puig and Wunderlich screens which seem to solve the problem. I'm waiting for detailed feedback on the Wunderlich before making a purchase, but the stock screen and a certain rider torso length is definitely an issue.

I have a make who's about 6ft 3, (3 inches taller than me) who doesn't get the same issue.

I've done a 4 day trip and it was just about bearable, but I wouldn't want a week away or longer.

Go short! I did 200 miles above 75 mph & zero buffeting & wind noise with 👂 plugs & this helmet was almost zero.
