Preferred Chain?

263 Views 12 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Mester
The stock chain appears to be the low cost solution. I'm wading in to the replacement chain and find most 525 chains are street chains whereas the 520 chains are more off road focused. Anyone with some beta on favored chain upgrade? Thinking DID 520 Gold X Ring but interested in the thoughts of others.

Okay, after a little homework we'll be going with the DID 525 ZVM-X. Silver (nickel) or gold will work but it will be plated to resist oxidation.

Mine will be getting a DID xring in either a 520 or 525 like my other bikes have all fitted, when the stock chain stretches to much lol

Would have worn through the stock chain first but evident oxdation on a lubed/prepped chain during a thee day adv ride convinced me to replace now instead of waiting and perhaps having to replace chainring/counter as well as chain due to differentiated wear. And we are of the same mindset - DID XRing is the way. I prefer the narrower 520 on my dirtbikes but retained the 525 width for the DDX. The tensile strength on this chain is unruly!

No issues with rust on my oem chain but it has stretched a little, I oil my chain after every ride and clean it every 3rd ride...

I tend to be pretty 'detail oriented' with respect to my chain but on this multi-day motocamping ride I hadn't planned on chain maintenance each day (it's a 3 day adv ride, not hard enduro) and didn't notice until the very end. All good though, we'll make the swap and get on with it!

did you change the chain?
and what about sprockets, did you find a set or did you buy the separately ?
finally, did you dismount the svingarm to put the chain on, or did you use a joint ?
thanks

Chain ordered but has not yet arrived. SProckets have little wear at this point so I'm sticking with the stock sprocket/chainring. Will not have to remove wheel - cut old chain, thread in new.

thanks, I never changede a chain without changing the sprocket at the same time, that will reduce the life of the new chain imho 🤔
but do you know where to get aftermarket sprocket ?

not sure where to get aftermarket chainring/sprocket but thinking im changing early in the sprocket/chainring life so as not to have worn in the teeth enough to impact life of the new chain

good question. the difference is the width between the inner plates of the chain. i would think you could replace a 520

Great question - don't know for sure. the difference is the width between the inner plates of the chain. the 525 being wider id think you could retro a 525 onto a stock 520 setup but sure the opposite. if you go this route, let us know your experience.
