Leaking Fork Seals - quick fix?

Hi all,

During a recent trip with a good bit of offroad, a fork began to leak. After a day or so, I was able to clean the seal with a small bit of plastic (a piece of a paint tray liner - worked well). And it appeared to work - the leak was gone the next morning.

Here's my dilemma: how do I know if it is truly fixed? Could I have lost all of the oil and THAT'S why it stopped? Is there a quick and easy way to determine the current oil level and top it off? Would love to avoid replacing the seal if possible (for the time being at least).

Thanks!

According to the workshop manual the forks take 681ml of fluid per side. If you have leaked that amount out I am pretty sure you would know all about it. I would just continue to ride it and keep an eye on it from here on. Cleaning seals they way you have described is pretty common and generally works okay as long as there is no damage to the seal.

Take a syringe and suck up 5-10ml of any random oil, then squeeze it out on your work bench and smear it around. That's the kind of mess a miniscule amount of oil makes, an amount you wouldn't possibly notice missing from your forks. If you had lost enough to worry about as far as fork function goes, it would have likely covered your brakes, your front wheel, the tire, the fender...

FWIW, I was riding offroad for 3 days in Colorado and both forks leaked, badly. It did cover the brakes, wheel etc. By the time I got back to AZ. I took to the Ducati dealer to replace seals and replenish fork oil. Also, replaced brake pads as they weren't functioning well with oil impact (bike had 7,300 miles FYI). I have since googled fork seal leaks and trail side repairs. Bought a Seal Mate tool (small plastic shiv to clean out fork dirt after pushing down the dust seal). Also carrying a small amount of waterproof grease to pack in the forks if I get a trail side leak. Lastly, just took delivery on a set of Kriega Fork Seal Savers.
